PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GREECE
Constantinos Stephanopoulos
(Attorney)

Born in Patras in 1926.
Studied law at the University of Athens and practiced for a number of years.
First elected to parliament in the seat of Achaia with the National Radical Union (ERE) party, in 1964.
Joined the New Democracy (ND) party, was elected to the central committee and appointed spokesman, in 1974.
Stood for the ND leadership twice, in 1981 and 1984.
Resigned from ND and founded Democratic Renewal (DHANA) with 9 ND MPs who crossed over, in 1985.
Disbanded DHANA and retired from politics after the party failed to gain representation at the European parliament, in 1994.
Elected President of the Republic, after been nominated by the Political Spring party (Politiki Anixi) and supported by ruling PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement), in March 1995.He was re-elected President of the Republic by Parliament on February 2000 with the backing of the two major political parties
Has held the positions of Minister for Commerce (1974), Minister for the Interior (1974-1976), Minister for Social Services (1976-1977), and Minister for the Presidency (1977-1981).
Constantinos (Costis) Stephanopoulos has two sons and a daughter.
